Wildlife Conservation
This area is considered by the Loddon and Eversley Partnership to be one of the key areas for biodiversity in Hampshire, containing a matrix of important habitats such as chalk rivers, ancient woodlands, fens, dry acid grassland and heathland. The rivers of the Loddon valley feed the Thames and rise near Basingstoke, flowing through a landscape rich in wetlands, woods and heaths. Many of these sites have either statutory or non statutory designations.
The area posseses a wealth of wildlife supported by these habitats, including species of national and international importance. Many of these species are under threat from loss of habitat or competition from introduced species. The watervole, for example, has suffered greatly from predation by the introduced American mink.
