The Loddon and Eversley Heritage Area contains a varied and diverse landscape shaped by natural processes and centuries of man’s influence. It is the legacy of ancient farming practices and a traditional way of life.
Whilst not being able to boast the grandeur of the neighbouring North Wessex Downs and South Downs Areas of Oustanding Natural Beauty, the Loddon and Eversley Heritage Area posseses some very fine landscapes. For uninterrupted views across the Thames Basin, the village of Farleigh Wallop just south of Basingstoke is well worth a visit. It is also a good starting point for those wanting a quiet walk or cycle ride in the countryside.
The area is steeped in history: Catherine of Aragon met her future husband Arthur- son and heir to Henry V11- at Dogmersfield; Basing House was the scene of battles during the Civil War in the 1600s; Queen Elizabeth 1st was a visitor to Elvetham near Hartley Wintney; and King John regularly travelled through en route from Winchester to Runny Mede.
Monuments and archaeological sites abound in the Heritage Area, whilst old and traditional builidings add character and interest. The Basingstoke Canal is not only an example of eighteenth century engineering but also the site of Second World War defence structures. |
